Yoga's ultimate goal, however, is to release the individual from suffering in the world and the cycle that leads to death. Yoga teaches the individual to control their mind and body and to transcend desires. The yogi then experiences a blissful union, via meditation, between the supreme reality and the individual's soul. This state of total self-collectedness will be the result of the yogi's understanding of the yogic philosophy.

The history of yoga philosophy has been complex and long. It is broken into two main schools, each with a different focus. The west is the home of the Yoga Sutras and Tantric schools. These tests are inexpensive, easy to conduct, and can be done almost anywhere. You could, for instance, run on a treadmill for two minutes, rest for one minute, and then go back to the starting point for 20 minutes. Throughout the session, your heart rate should be within a certain range.

This method is known as the "Bruce Protocol". Bruce was himself a runner and developed the protocol after realizing his heart rate wouldn't increase when he ran for longer distances.
